Participants will gain an understanding of key risk factors\, prevalence\, and the impact these conditions have on overall health and quality of life. \nThe session emphasizes the role of nutrition\, physical activity\, and other lifestyle factors in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Participants will learn how early intervention and consistent healthy habits can help slow disease progression and\, in some cases\, improve outcomes in the early stages. \nBy highlighting the connection between physical health and brain health\, this training provides practical\, evidence-informed strategies that individuals and caregivers can incorporate into daily routines to support healthy aging and reduce the risk of chronic conditions. \n\nObjectives \n\nIdentify several causes of chronic diseases.\nIdentify ways to boost memory.\nIdentify ways in which you can become a better caregiver through nutrition and healthy lifestyle practices.\nLearn what healthy foods to add to your lifestyle.\nLearn five foods that will boost memory and why.\nUnderstand an overall picture of why taking care of yourself can promote healthy aging and avoid illness or disease.\n\n\nFacilitator\nLaurie Neyhard is a seasoned professional specializing in ergonomics\, wellness\, and health promotion. With over a decade of experience\, Laurie combines her expertise in injury prevention\, workplace wellness\, and life enrichment to design and implement impactful programs across various industries. Laurie holds a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from California University of Pennsylvania\, graduating summa cum laude\, and a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from Lock Haven University\, where she earned multiple accolades for academic and leadership excellence. Laurie also holds certifications in wellness\, fitness\, and caregiver training. Participants will examine how personal experiences and biases can shape perceptions of loss and learn strategies for approaching difficult conversations with empathy\, active listening\, and compassion. The training will review models of grief and mourning\, discuss coping strategies for individuals and caregivers\, and address supportive approaches in special circumstances surrounding death and loss. Participants will also explore resilience\, relationship-centered care\, and recognize when professional support may be beneficial during the grieving process. \n\nObjectives \n\nDefine and understand the basic concepts of death\, grief\, and bereavement.\nRecognize how personal experiences and biases may influence perceptions of death\, dying\, and grief.\nApply the principles of active listening and empathy when engaging in difficult conversations related to loss and grief.\nReview and apply models and theories that help explain grief\, mourning\, and the grieving process.\nIdentify supportive approaches and practical considerations for individuals experiencing grief in special or complex circumstances.\nRecognize when professional support or intervention may be beneficial for individuals experiencing grief and bereavement.\n\n\nFacilitator\nLisa Arifer-Polcha has been a Licensed Social Worker in Pennsylvania since 2004 and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Temple University that same year. Since receiving her degree\, Lisa has worked primarily in the medical field of social work. She served as a hospice social worker for more than seven years and has worked as a medical social worker in dialysis care for over five years. \nPrior to her medical social work experience\, Lisa worked in both direct care and case management roles supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. She also volunteers with the Perry County Office of Aging APPRISE Program. \nIn addition to her professional and volunteer work\, Lisa provides educational presentations and consultation services in the areas of aging\, grief\, and geriatric care management. \n\nContinuing Education Units (CEUs)\n\nSocial Work: 2.0 CEUs (Pending Approval)\n\nNational Association of Social Workers (NASW) Disclosure: Upon approval\, 2.0 CEs will be awarded for completion of this course. This training will provide a comprehensive understanding of compassion fatigue\, with a focus on how these issues affect individuals in caregiving or helping professions. Participants will learn to define and differentiate between burnout and compassion fatigue\, understand their underlying causes\, and identify their unique symptoms. In addition\, the training will explore protective factors that can reduce the impact of these challenges and guide participants in developing personalized self-care plans. This training will equip participants with the knowledge and strategies needed to prevent and manage compassion fatigue in both their professional and personal lives. \n\nObjectives \n\nDefine and understand burnout\, vicarious/secondary trauma\, and compassion fatigue.\nDifferentiate between burnout vs. compassion fatigue.\nUtilize assessment tools to understand personal levels of compassion satisfaction as well as compassion fatigue.\nUnderstand protective factors and develop a plan of self-care.\n\n\nFacilitator\nLisa Arifer-Polcha has been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker since April 2026.  Prior to that Lisa was a Licensed Social Worker in Pennsylvania since 2004 and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Temple University that same year.
