SUMMARY:Agitation & Aggression in Dementia: How to Prevent & De-escalate Hostile Behaviors - September 12
DESCRIPTION:presents:\n\nAgitation & Aggression in Dementia:\nHow to Prevent & De-escalate Hostile Behaviors\n  \nWebinar\n  \n \n  \nDate & Time: Friday\, September 12\, 2025 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nLocation: Webinar via Zoom\nCost: $5 \nThis project is funded by the Emerging Philanthropist Program Endowment fund\, a fund of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. \n\nWhat to Expect\n\nAggressive behaviors in dementia patients can be considered common. And while it may be comforting to know you are not dealing with an anomaly\, it does not make managing the situation easier or less frustrating as a caretaker. Aggressive behaviors could be verbal or physical\, and at times come for no apparent reason. They can be sudden\, and identifying the trigger can put pressure on caregivers\, especially in a facility setting where other patients may be at risk. This training will discuss the causes of this aggressive behavior and share practical\, effective responses to these behaviors. We will review case studies and current research on how others have successfully operated with these obstacles. We will also promote the creation of an I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) action plan that all staff can contribute to\, which can be used when urgent situations arise requiring immediate attention. \n\nObjectives \n\nUnderstand the cause of aggressive behaviors in dementia patients.\nIdentify possible triggers\, which can then be avoided to minimize disruption.\nIdentify current treatment plans used with dementia patients expressing aggressive behavior.\nDiscuss potential options to address these behaviors.\nDiscuss how to ensure other residents are kept safe during outbursts.\nCreate action steps/ I.C.E. action plan.\nReview case studies to engage real-life application of the action plan.\n\n\nFacilitator\nErin Edwards is a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with a Master’s degree in Psychology. She currently works for Penn State College of Medicine/Hershey Medical Center within the Division of Autism in the Department of Psychiatry.  Erin has partnered with PennCares Support Services for many years\, developing and delivering trainings that focus on older adults and behavioral health topics. She has extensive experience working with children diagnosed with autism and other mental health conditions across various service settings\, including specialized education programs\, home and community-based BHRS services\, intensive family-based mental health services\, and outpatient care. In addition to her work with children\, Erin has supported adults with autism and co-occurring mental health diagnoses in community\, home\, and workplace environments. Her areas of expertise also include hoarding behaviors\, anxiety\, depression\, and suicide-related concerns. In her supervisory roles\, Erin has provided a wide range of trainings to direct care staff\, emphasizing practical intervention strategies and approaches to reduce caregiver frustration and fatigue. \n\nContinuing Education Units (CEUs)\n\nSocial Work: 2.5 CEUs – Pending Approval (No Additional Cost)\nNursing: 2.5 CEUs – Pending Approval (No Additional Cost)\n\nSocial Work: “NASW-PA Chapter is a co-sponsor of this workshop.  Upon approval\, 2.5 CEUs will be awarded for completion of this course. SUMMARY:Agitation & Aggression in Dementia: How to Prevent & De-escalate Hostile Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Agitation & Aggression in Dementia: \nHow to Prevent & De-escalate Hostile Behaviors\n \n  \nDate & Time: Friday\, March 7\, 2025 | 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.\nLocation: Messiah Lifeways\, 100 Mt Allen Drive\, Mechanicsburg\, PA 17055\nCost: $10 \nThis program is made possible through the Emerging Philanthropist Program Endowment Fund\, a fund of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities. \n\nWhat to Expect\nAggressive behaviors in dementia patients can be considered common. And while it may be comforting to know you are not dealing with an anomaly it does not make managing the situation easier or less frustrating as a caretaker. Aggressive behaviors could be verbal or physical and at times come for no apparent reason. They can be sudden and identifying the trigger can place pressure on caretakers\, especially in a facility setting where other patients could be placed at risk. This training will discuss the causes of this aggressive behavior and share practical\, effective responses to these behaviors. We will review case studies and current research on how others have successfully operated with these obstacles. We will also promote the creation of an I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) action plan that all staff can provide input to\, which can be used when urgent situations occur requiring immediate attention. \nObjectives \n\nUnderstand the cause of aggressive behaviors in dementia patients.\nIdentify possible triggers\, which can then be avoided to minimize disruption.\nIdentify current treatment plans used with dementia patients expressing aggressive behavior.\nDiscuss potential options to address these behaviors.\nDiscuss how to ensure other residents are kept safe during outbursts.\nCreate action steps/ I.C.E. action plan.\nReview case studies to engage real-life application of the action plan.\n\n\nWho Should Attend?\nProfessionals\, family caregivers\, friends\, and anyone interacting regularly with dementia patients. \n\nFacilitator\nErin Edwards is a Board-Certified Behavior Analysts\, with a Masters in Psychology. Erin currently works for Penn State College of Medicine/ Hershey Medical Center with the Division of Autism within the Department of Psychiatry.  Erin and PennCares Support Services have worked together for many years developing trainings encompassing older adults and issues surrounding behavioral health. Erin has worked with children with autism and other mental health diagnoses across a variety of services\, including specialized schooling\, home and community BHRS services\, intensive family based mental health services and currently outpatient services.
